Feature Evaluation through Product Study
Once I had created the user stories, I studied a number of travel and trip planning apps. I compared the Home Screens the booking section, the search and selection, and how they integrate other services into their solution.
Scoping the Design Intervention Areas
With integration of location data and commute method of passengers into the app, optimised travel planning and accurate travel time estimation can be achieved.
Considering the San Francisco- Los Angeles corridor is one of the busiest corridors in the US, I explored SF-LA-SD and SF-LA-LV as a potential route for the Hyperloop tube track for this project.

Before moving on to hi-fidelity mock-ups I did a round of user testing to find out the flow and the content.
The participants were asked to A) Make a booking using the app
B) Retrieve the existing booking and start the journey.
Second round of testing and feedback
Learning: To give people agency to plan their trip.
Final wireflows for 3 features
#1 Allow users to plan and book tickets for a particular day and providing information to plan their trip.
#2 Let users retrieve booking and make end-to-end journey with precise time information and seamless trip planning with the integration APIs of service providers of local modes of transport.
#3 Users can view and pre-select Hyperloop pod entertainment for the trip so that they can enjoy it as soon as they are settled in the pod.
Visual Design System
Knowing that the booking information can be dense, I wanted to keep a minimal color palette with good strong contrast with neutral and clear typefaces. The secondary colors are used to highlight action items.
The home screen has a dark background so that the user’s attention is drawn only to the nav-bar and the action button. Once in the individual sections, they a lot of dense information is spread out across the workspace so I decided to keep a lighter background.
I looked at some of the micro-interactions to push myself imagine how the transitions would be which would also help the users while testing.

Reflections and learning
I started doing this project to explore my passions of understanding the way people move, understand, and experience our world. When I started out, I had ambitious plans to work out all the trip scenarios including the check-in and boarding process too. Quickly I realised that there were a number of fuzzy details that could lead to a number of design directions depending upon how the infrastructure is built out. Hence I decide to scope my design to two probable and desirable future scenarios.
By talking to other designers and potential users I got a lot of insight on how people go about trip planning as well. Getting into the weeds with micro-interaction and transitions raised my appreciation for the depth of thinking that goes into it. Going forward, I would like to share this with the larger CMU Hyperloop team and develop it further with them.
